More Than Just Grape Juice: What Red Wine Really Is

Mehr als nur Traubensaft: Was Rotwein wirklich ist

Red Wine – Power, Depth, and Passion in a Glass

There are moments when a glass of wine is more than just a drink – it's a story. And red wine perhaps tells this story loudest. Deep, complex, full of character: for many wine lovers, red wine is the ultimate discipline.

What makes red wine special?

Red wine is made from red or blue grapes, with the skins remaining in the must during fermentation. This is precisely where the secret lies: the skins release color, tannins, and aromas – those bitter, structure-giving substances that are responsible for the typical mouthfeel of a red wine.

Captivating Aromas

Depending on the grape variety and origin, red wine exhibits an astonishing spectrum of aromas: from dark fruits like cherry, blackberry, and plum to spicy notes such as pepper, leather, and tobacco, as well as chocolatey, earthy, or floral nuances. A good Rioja tastes different from a Bordeaux – and a Barolo again differs from a Pinot Noir from Burgundy.

The Right Temperature

Red wine is often served too warm. The optimal drinking window, depending on the wine style, is between 14 and 18 °C. Lighter red wines like a Beaujolais can be a little cooler, while a powerful Cabernet Sauvignon develops its full complexity at 17–18 °C.

Food Pairing

Red wine loves company – preferably at the table. Hearty meats like beef steak, leg of lamb, or braised dishes are classic accompaniments. But mature cheese, dark chocolate, or Mediterranean tapas also harmonize wonderfully.
