Summer in a Glass: What Exactly Is White Wine?

Sommer im Glas: Was genau ist eigentlich Weißwein?

White Wine – Freshness, Elegance, and the Ease of Enjoyment

White wine is summer in a bottle. It stands for freshness, liveliness, and an lightness that no other wine color radiates so effortlessly. But anyone who thinks white wine is less complex than its red sibling is greatly mistaken.

From Vineyard to Glass

White wine is predominantly made from white or green grapes – in some styles, even from red grapes whose skins are immediately separated from the juice. The must ferments without skin contact, which gives the wine its light, golden to lemon-yellow color and generally makes it leaner and fruitier.

A Sea of Diversity

The world of white wines is vast: a crisp Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand brings tropical citrus and fresh herbs to the glass. An aged Chardonnay from Burgundy, on the other hand, surprises with creaminess, butter caramel, and ripe fruit. A Riesling from the Mosel, in turn, fascinatingly combines minerality, zesty acidity, and a delicate sweetness.

Chilling is a Must

White wine best unfolds its aromas between 8 and 12 °C. Light, fresh styles like Pinot Grigio prefer it a little cooler, while full, creamy white wines like a grand Pinot Blanc can handle a bit more temperature to show their depth.

Food Pairing Recommendation

White wine is the perfect companion for fish, seafood, white meat, and creamy pasta dishes. Asian cuisine – whether sushi, Thai curry, or Vietnamese summer rolls – also harmonizes fantastically with a well-chosen white wine.
